Image Of The Month - October 2014
Yes, it's time to say goodbye to Summer, at least for this year. With the advent of the autumnal equinox on September 23rd, the nights are now longer the days and Fall is officially here. As a farewell to what has been a glorious Summer, I chose this image because it recalls memories of long, warm days spent at the beach.
I actually shot this photograph on my family's annual vacation in Maine. It was a beautiful, bright day, but as so often happens in coastal Maine, a low-lying fog rolls in off the ocean, giving everything a wonderful, ethereal atmosphere. Above the fog, the sky is clear and the bright sun diffuses through the fog creating avery unusual and compelling light.
I watched this game of beach bocce for quite a while, waiting for the arrangement of the players to give me a good composition in the frame. The final ingredient was to also capture the "decisive moment" of a ball in flight as one of the players was releasing it.
